The reconnaissance troops who are first in for the British Army’s Global Response Force have tested how they can insert behind enemy lines in aircraft landing on impromptu runways. Mounted in heavily armed RWMIK patrol vehicles, troops from Pathfinders - the advance force for 16 Air Assault Brigade - were delivered onto Pembrey Sands in southwest Wales from an RAF ATLAS C.1 (A400M) aircraft. With the beach’s vast expanse exposed at low tide, the aircraft swooped in to land on an area that Pathfinders had identified as firm and large enough to land on and marked for the pilots. With its four engines still running, the aircraft dropped its back ramp for the vehicles to drive off, and then took off after being on the ground for the shortest possible time. The rising tide covered all evidence that the aircraft had ever been there, while Pathfinders quickly moved off into the Welsh countryside. In military jargon this is known as a Rapid Air Landing (RAL) on a Temporary Landing Zone (TLZ). For the aircraft of the RAF’s Air Mobility Force to be able to conduct these operations gives greater flexibility in how troops can be delivered on to an operation, in a more covert way and without being restricted to permanent runways that can be defended by enemy troops. Pathfinders are trained to infiltrate behind enemy lines and work in small patrols, either in vehicles or on foot, to find and relay vital information back to assist mission planning. A key role is identifying drop zones and landing zones where the main body of troops can be parachuted or landed by helicopter or aircraft.
