Northrop Unveils GPS-Free Navigation System for Deep Space Missions

Spacecraft could soon navigate far beyond Earth without relying on GPS or satellite signals as Northrop Grumman introduces a new gyroscope-based system designed to deliver continuous positioning data in deep space and near-orbit missions.

The LR-450 uses milli-Hemispherical Resonating Gyroscopes (mHRGs) to track rotation and orientation internally, allowing spacecraft to determine where they are without external navigation inputs.

It essentially enables continuous navigation across a range of missions, from low-Earth orbit operations to deep space exploration.
