J-Squared Expands Ottawa Hub for Nuclear EMP Defense Testing

Canadian electronics developer J-Squared Technologies has announced the expansion of its Ottawa center to strengthen support for nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) testing, related defense manufacturing, and secure storage efforts.

Located in Kanata, the 26,000-square-foot (2,415-square-meter) site is poised to become the North American country’s large-format Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse-Waveguide Method (NEMP-WM), designed to simulate nuclear EMP conditions and assess system resilience in high-threat environments.

The renovation also adds secure storage for classified projects and a manufacturing area for militarized cabinets, tactical communications systems, specialized servers, and custom cable assemblies.

The NEMP-WM is part of J-Squared’s five-phase Secure Innovation Hubs modernization initiative launched in 2023 to support Canadian Department of Defence strategies and accelerate development of next-generation capabilities.

The network covers sites across Western Canada, Eastern Canada, and the Arctic North, and is intended to support collaboration with startups, research organizations, and academic institutions on defense manufacturing and testing.

“As the modern battlefield evolves, defense solutions must prioritize rapid adaptation,” said Cheyane Wicks, general manager of the military sector at J-Squared Technologies.

“J-Squared remains committed to scaling our secure innovation hubs and championing sovereign Canadian technologies. Our focus is on agile operation and deep collaboration to engineer solutions tailored for today’s complex mission requirements.”
