The US State Department has approved a potential $373.6-million foreign military sale of Joint Direct Attack Munition-Extended Range (JDAM-ER) tail kits to Ukraine.
Kyiv’s requested package covers 1,200 KMU-572 JDAM tail kits and 332 KMU-556 JDAM tail kits, in addition to FMU-139 fuze systems, support equipment, spare and repair parts, and related support services.
Boeing has been designated as the primary contractor.
“The proposed sale will improve Ukraine’s capability to meet current and future threats by further equipping it to conduct self-defense and regional security missions with a more robust air defense capability,” according to the notice.
JDAM-ER
The JDAM family converts unguided bombs into precision-guided munitions, with its extended range variant capable of striking targets up to 40 nautical miles (74 kilometers/46 miles) away.
Using GPS/INS guidance and deployable wings, the JDAM-ER enables stand-off attacks from safer distances, improving aircraft survivability against enemy air defenses.
Designed for all-weather attacks against fixed and hardened targets, the weapon has been fielded by Ukraine since 2023 on modified Soviet-era MiG-29 and Su-27 fighter jets for stand-off strikes against Russian logistics hubs, defensive positions, and command sites.
