Nigeria Expands Domestic Defense Tech With New Drone Systems

Terra Industries has unveiled interceptor drones and battlefield systems as Nigeria steps up efforts to build a domestic defense industry.

The announcement from the Abuja-based firm comes as the country accelerates a broader push to develop homegrown military technology and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, according to a report by Nigerian newspaper The Guardian.

The startup introduced interceptor drones, mine-clearing unmanned vehicles, and battlefield intelligence software designed for counter-insurgency operations.

Chief executive Nathan Nwachukwu said the systems were built to respond to evolving threats, including improvised explosive devices and drone-based attacks that have become more common in Nigeria’s conflict zones.

That security pressure is feeding into a policy shift at the institutional level. The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), which oversees military production, has backed deeper collaboration with local firms as part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness.

Major General Babatunde Alaya said the initiative reflects the need for technologies that are better adapted to local battlefield conditions.

Africa’s Local Drone Push

Nigeria is positioning itself as a leading defense manufacturing hub in the region, with both government and private sector actors increasing investment in local production to strengthen security and surveillance capabilities.

In April, DICON partnered with EIB Group to expand production lines for autonomous systems, tactical gear, and cyber solutions. It also includes technology transfer initiatives aimed at building local engineering and technical expertise.

In March, Nigus International Investment Limited and UAE-based Elmirate Investment signed a memorandum of understanding worth up to $200 million to develop the country’s defense manufacturing capacity.

Earlier, in 2023, Elites Logistics & Development Services launched local military drone production and assembly following an agreement with original equipment manufacturer partners.
