The German Armed Forces has awarded Rheinmetall a multi-billion-euro framework contract to supply FV-014 autonomous reconnaissance and strike drones.
The first call-off is valued at approximately 300 million euros ($351 million), with deliveries scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027 following qualification in the second quarter of 2026.
The contract includes an option to procure a five-figure number of FV-014 drones.
“Within a very short time, Rheinmetall has developed an autonomous drone that combines reconnaissance and strike capabilities,” Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said.
“The FV-014 will enable the Bundeswehr to protect its own forces and engage critical targets in a fast, controlled, and effective manner. We are grateful for the trust placed in us and will begin producing the system in large quantities on an industrial scale very soon.”
FV-014 Loitering Munition
The FV-014 loitering munition system has a range of up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) and carries a 4-kilogram (9-pound) warhead capable of penetrating 600 millimeters (23.66 inches) of rolled homogeneous armor.
It combines reconnaissance and strike functions and is produced entirely within the European Union.
The system can remain airborne for up to 70 minutes, surveilling targets before engagement, while its electric propulsion enables a low-noise, stealthy approach. A secure data link allows operators to identify and track targets in real time or abort missions if needed.
It is designed to operate under electronic countermeasures and without GPS, and can be deployed in swarms to strike multiple targets or overwhelm air defenses.
The munition can be launched from multiple platforms, including ground vehicles and naval vessels. Primary targets include armored vehicles, artillery positions, and enemy command posts.
