Indra to Equip 6 More Type 212CD Submarines With EW, Radar Systems

Indra is set to equip an additional six Type 212CD submarines with its electronic warfare (EW) and radar systems under a new contract signed with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

The latest deal builds on an existing contract where Indra is already supplying the same fully digital EW and advanced radar technology for the first six submarines Germany and Norway ordered, now totaling 12 platforms.

Type 212CD is a next‑generation conventional submarine with air‑independent propulsion, intended to protect waters in the North Atlantic and ensure high interoperability with NATO.

Ana Belén Buendía, Indra’s Head of Naval Business Unit, described the Type 212CD as “one of the most advanced naval programmes in Europe, which is of strategic importance for Germany, Norway and the European defence industry as a whole.”

Type 212CD

Norway and Germany launched a joint procurement for six Type 212CD submarines in 2021, initially split between four for Norway and two for Germany.

Oslo added two more in early 2026, while Berlin approved four additional units in 2024, bringing the combined total to 12 submarines.

TKMS is the prime contractor.

Meanwhile, Kongsberg leads the consortium with TKMS and Atlas Elektronik to develop the ORCCA combat management system, integrating components from Indra to enhance performance in demanding environments.

HENSOLDT is also included in the program, supplying the OMS 150 and OMS 300 optronic mast systems, providing non-hull-penetrating sensor solutions for the submarines.
