Thomas Global Demonstrates Abrams Virtual Trainer to US Army
Thomas Global Systems has demonstrated its Abrams Immersive Tactical Trainer (ITT) to the US Army as part of efforts to expand virtual training capabilities for armored forces.
The company showcased both standard and containerized versions of the trainer, originally acquired by the Australian Army under Project LAND 907, to US government and industry partners.
Led by the army’s Capability Program Executive for Simulation, Training, Test & Threat, the evaluation focused on how synthetic training systems can support multinational interoperability and future virtual training acquisitions.
The Abrams ITT combines tactical crew, gunnery, and driver training in a high-fidelity simulated environment for the M1A2 SEPv3 tank.
By enabling full-crew training without the costs and logistical constraints of live-fire exercises, the system enhances readiness and training capacity.
Following the US assessment, the trainer will return to Australia to support ongoing Australian Army training for Abrams crews.
US Defense Expands Virtual Training Systems
During the past year, the Pentagon has pushed deeper into simulation-based training, backed by contracts and new technologies aimed at improving realism while reducing costs.
In May 2025, Cubic Defense secured a contract to support the US Army’s synthetic training environment, including tools that connect live, virtual, and constructive training into a unified system.
By June 2025, HII’s Mission Technologies division was included in a $379-million ceiling contract to deliver training solutions for the US Army’s Simulation, Training and Instrumentation programs.
In July 2025, the US Army introduced haptics technology into its training systems, adding physical feedback such as recoil and impact to make virtual environments more realistic for soldiers.
