Germany Funds 15,000 Interceptor Drones for Ukraine

Germany has tasked Quantum Systems to deliver 15,000 Ukraine-produced Strila interceptor drones to the National Guard of Ukraine, bolstering its ability to counter Russian drone attacks.

The agreement also covers training for National Guard units, logistics support, and further development of unmanned capabilities.

This follows Quantum Systems’ investment in WIY Drones, the developer of Strila. Production will be scaled through a joint effort between the two companies, initially expanding in Ukraine to meet urgent operational demand, with potential future exports of surplus output.

“Ukrainian engineers have developed some of the most effective counter-drone technologies in the world,” Co-CEO of Quantum Systems Sven Kruck said.

“Quantum Systems brings these solutions to industrial scale and helps Ukraine close its sky.”

Strila Interceptor

The Strila system, described by its developer as a rocket-type air defense interceptor, is a specialized counter-drone solution designed to neutralize fast, agile aerial threats.

Its primary targets include loitering munitions such as the Shahed-136 and Shahed-131 drones, as well as other high-speed attack and reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles.

The system emphasizes rapid engagement, precision interception, and the ability to handle small, maneuverable targets that traditional air defense systems may struggle to track or destroy.

Powered by four motors, the interceptor can exceed speeds of 350 kilometers (217 miles) per hour. It operates up to 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) in tactical mode and can extend to a maximum range of 28 kilometers (17 miles), with an operational ceiling of 4 kilometers (2.5 miles).

The latest variant features GPS-independent, jam-resistant operation, mid-flight communication channel switching, and upgraded day/night cameras for enhanced target tracking.

Production has reportedly scaled rapidly, with approximately 100 units manufactured daily. Serial deliveries have begun, and the unit cost has been reduced to around $2,300 as of January 2026, making it a cost-effective option for drone defense.
