Pilatus Picks Thales’ Radio Management System for European PC-7 Aircraft

Swiss aircraft manufacturer Pilatus has selected French defense firm Thales to supply a radio management system for the PC-7 military training aircraft operated in Europe.

Teams from both companies collaborated to develop the system that best fits the PC-7 program’s requirements.

The system features the ability to adapt to several scenarios — ranging from training missions to tactical operations — and integrate with diverse mission systems.

It is also designed to function in complex operational environments, ensuring robust and uninterrupted communications.

Pilatus’ selection of Thales’ system signals confidence in the French company, which acquired Cobham Aerospace Communications in 2024, strengthening its portfolio in the cockpit connectivity and secure communications sector.

“Together, we have come up with a system offering a high-level of efficiency, which will enable these aircraft to carry out extremely demanding missions,” said Thales VP of Aerospace Communications, Nicolas Bonleux.

PC-7 in Europe

Pilatus produced the base model PC-7 military trainer aircraft in the late 1970s, and introduced the PC-7 MKX — the aircraft’s next-generation evolution — in 2021.

Designed to mimic modern combat aircraft cockpits, the 34-foot (10-meter)-long PC-7 MKX incorporates modern digital avionics, a head-up display, and an integrated system comprising the aircraft, simulators, and ground-based tools.

It is equipped with a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-25C engine with 700 horsepower, enabling it to achieve a top speed of 345 miles (555 kilometers) per hour and a service ceiling of 25,000 feet (7,260 meters).

The PC-7 is in service with or is awaiting delivery by several European militaries, including France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
