Indra Leads $10.5M Push to Bolster Spain’s Defense Electronics Industry

Indra Group is building Spain’s first homegrown gallium nitride ecosystem to strengthen the country’s defense electronics and communications systems.

The company is spearheading GIGaNTE, a nine-million-euro ($10.5-million) research and development initiative under Spain’s Science and Innovation Missions Program. 

This project unites industry and academia to develop high-performance electronic devices and circuits capable of operating at demanding frequencies for radar, communications, and electronic warfare applications.

GIGaNTE will establish a full domestic value chain — from design to production, integration, and final validation — to enable more compact, reliable, and efficient modules and antennas. 

Televes Corporación, SPARC Foundry, and RBZ Robot Design contribute expertise in advanced electronics, circuit design, and industrial manufacturing platforms, while researchers from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, University of Vigo, University of Salamanca, and GRADIANT provide specialized research in GaN architectures, device characterization, and circuit integration.

Boosting Spanish Defense Communications

Spain has advanced multiple programs to strengthen military communications. 

In February 2025, it launched SpainSat NG I, its most advanced secure communications satellite, supporting X‑band, military Ka‑band, and UHF frequencies for long-range tactical operations.

By October 2025, Spain sent SpainSat NG II into orbit to expand secure communications for its military and NATO allies, reinforcing strategic autonomy in space-based defense communications.

In addition, Spanish Army radar units deployed to Romania in early 2025 supported NATO air surveillance missions, showcasing integrated airspace monitoring capabilities.
