Rheinmetall to Supply Seasnake Guns for Swedish Combat Boat 90 Fleet

German arms developer Rheinmetall has received a contract to provide Seasnake 30 light naval guns for the Swedish Navy’s Combat Boat 90 fast assault craft.

The first order under the acquisition covers eight of the close-in weapon systems and is valued at 63 million euros ($74.5 million).

In addition to the guns, the contract includes airburst and 30-millimeter training ammunition, spare parts, and associated services over four years, with an option for up to 29 additional systems.

Stockholm is scheduled to receive the initial package in February 2028.

The remotely operated Seasnake 30 is built with cameras, infrared sensors, and a laser rangefinder, enabling automatic target detection and simultaneous tracking of multiple threats in all-day operations.

Its revolver cannon has a firing rate of 1,100 rounds per minute and has a muzzle velocity of 1,050 meters (3,445 feet) per second.

First NATO Customer

Rheinmetall said the deal serves as a major breakthrough for the company, as it marked the first time a NATO member has adopted the Seasnake 30 platform.

“This decision highlights confidence in the performance and future viability of Rheinmetall’s modern naval weapon systems,” Rheinmetall said.

“At the same time, the order reinforces the Group’s standing as a dependable provider of maritime defence solutions within the alliance.”

For Amphibious Support

Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration specified in a related announcement that the Seasnake 30 will be fielded as an anti-aircraft capability in support of amphibious battalions.

This function will be reinforced by the Spexer 2000 3D MkIII Naval radar systems, also being purchased from Hensoldt, enhancing effectiveness on the battlefield.

“The automatic cannon is a powerful weapon that takes out drones or helicopters with high precision … and thus protects one’s own units and increases offensive capability,” said Emil Waxin Nilsson, project manager at the defense materiel agency.

“The automatic cannon complements already existing weapon systems for amphibious combat and makes the battalions even more dangerous to the enemy.”
