Embraer Launches S. Korea’s First C-390 Millennium Tactical Airlifter

Embraer has rolled out the Republic of Korea Air Force’s initial C-390 Millennium aircraft after completing the final phase of its assembly.

The milestone is part of Seoul’s decision in 2023 to adopt new tactical airborne logistics platforms under the government’s Large Transport Aircraft initiative.

With the procurement of the Brazilian military airlift system, the country became the aircraft’s first customer in Asia.

In addition to the planes, Embraer will provide a support package as well as associated services to enable collaboration with South Korean repair and sustainment companies, ensuring operational availability of the future fleet.

“This aircraft represents advanced multi-mission capabilities and reliability backed by engineering excellence for ROKAF,” said Bosco da Costa Jr., CEO and President of Embraer Defense and Security.

“Additionally, industrial cooperation with Korea is advancing very well and strengthening our global supply chain as we scale up our C-390 production to support global customers.”

The C-390 Millennium Aircraft

Embraer’s C-390 Millennium platform can carry up to 26,000 kilograms (57,320 pounds) of equipment or about 80 armed soldiers.

That payload capacity is also applicable for moving seven master pallets, six pallets with about 30 personnel, 60 paratroopers, or about 70 medical evacuation stretchers, depending on the user’s requirements.

The C-390 supports long-range flights with two IAE V2500-E5 turbofan engines and a maximum fuel load of 23,000 kilograms (50,706 pounds).

The 35-meter (115-foot) system has a top speed of more than  900 kilometers (559 miles) per hour, a range of 6,000 kilometers (3,728 miles), and a service ceiling of 11,000 meters (36,089 feet).
