Bell Textron, Korea Aerospace Partner on High Speed Helicopter Program
Bell Textron has signed an agreement with Korea Aerospace Industries to examine potential solutions for the Republic of Korea’s High Speed Medium Utility Helicopter program.
The agreement focuses on assessing configurations based on Bell’s MV-75 platform, a tiltrotor design intended to combine vertical takeoff and landing with higher cruise speeds and extended range compared to conventional helicopters.
Under the deal, the two companies will evaluate how such a platform could meet South Korea’s operational requirements, including performance factors such as speed, range, and maneuverability.
Part of the assessment also involves a modular open systems approach, which enables easier integration and replacement of subsystems, including mission equipment and weapons, without extensive redesign.
The collaboration will additionally consider industrial cooperation aspects, including potential roles for local production or integration as the program develops.
Korea Aerospace Industries’ Latest Programs
Korea Aerospace Industries is progressing its domestic fighter program while expanding industrial partnerships.
In March, the state-run company presented the first mass-production model of the Republic of Korea Air Force’s KF-21 Boramae.
The rollout marks a key step in a program first outlined more than two decades ago to develop an indigenous combat aircraft.
Pending final verification, the aircraft is expected to enter service in September.
In parallel, KAI has expanded cooperation with other defense firms.
In February, it signed a deal with Hanwha Aerospace to collaborate on unmanned systems, aircraft engines, and commercial space projects.
US-based Kratos Defense & Security Solutions also partnered with KAI last year to develop manned-unmanned teaming capabilities for future aircraft.
