Thailand to Form New Defense Science Body to Cut Military Import Dependence

Thailand has approved the creation of a new Defence Science and Technology Department (DSTD) to coordinate military research and strengthen the country’s ability to develop its own defense solutions, according to local media.

The new department, approved in Bangkok during a meeting of the Office of National Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Policy Council, will operate under the Thai Ministry of Defence and align research with national security needs while boosting the country’s self-reliance.

Officials said the DSTD will coordinate and streamline research across government agencies and universities to reduce overlap and improve efficiency.

Its scope will include both basic studies and the development of dual-use technologies for civilian and military applications, supported by the defense ministry’s existing staff, test facilities, and technical infrastructure.

The initiative is expected to play a key role in reducing Thailand’s current 98 percent dependence on imported defense technology and weapons.

Linking Innovation With National Goals

Supachai Pathumnakul, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, presented a strategy under DSTD to better connect education and research with Thailand’s long-term goals.

The framework will focus on workforce training, practical technology development, and stronger support for small businesses and startups involved in innovation.

He emphasized that the DSTD will serve as a link between scientists and the armed forces, helping ensure new research directly supports the Southeast Asian country’s security priorities.

Officials also proposed creating a Defence and Military Energy Industry Center to continue managing military innovation once the DSTD achieves necessary program management status.

This segment will help sustain defense research in line with the Science, Research and Innovation Promotion Act of 2019, which promotes national development through unified research and innovation policy.
