German defense manufacturer RENK Group has received a contract worth over 70 million euros ($81.1 million) to supply HSWL 295 transmissions for Poland’s K2 Black Panther main battle tanks.
The transmissions will be produced at the company’s Augsburg center in Bavaria and delivered to Warsaw as part of the country’s broader effort to expand its armored vehicle fleet and defense capabilities.
In a related move, RENK also signed a service support agreement with Ukraine to help strengthen the country’s defense systems amid ongoing regional tensions.
Expanding K2 Fleet in Europe
Poland ordered hundreds of K2 battle tanks from South Korea in 2022 as part of a large-scale modernization drive.
The first deliveries began the same year, with production gradually shifting to local Polish facilities under a technology transfer agreement.
The tanks are expected to replace aging Soviet-era models and enhance interoperability within NATO.
While Ukraine does not operate K2s, Poland’s modernization has allowed it to transfer legacy tanks to Kyiv, including Leopard 2 and T-72 models, to support the war-torn country’s defense against Russia’s continued invasion.
Regional Defense Cooperation
Poland, which borders Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, has become one of NATO’s most active contributors to regional security and defense modernization.
RENK said its continued cooperation with Warsaw, a country viewed as a key partner in Europe’s defense framework, highlights the firm’s expanding role as a major supplier of propulsion systems for allied forces.
“With its growing defense capacities and strategic investment in military technology, Poland is now among the largest providers of troops within NATO and is making a significant contribution to the collective security of Europe,” said Michael Masur, CEO of RENK Vehicle Mobility Solutions.
“We are firmly committed to providing our partners in the region with strong support through RENK technology.”
