US Army Boosts Logistics Power With 86 Mack Defense M917A3 Trucks

The US Army has ordered 86 M917A3 heavy dump trucks from Mack Defense to strengthen its tactical logistics and engineering capabilities.

The new order expands the service’s growing fleet of modernized construction and transport vehicles supporting missions from base development to battlefield recovery.

Built on Mack’s Granite commercial platform, the M917A3 is adapted to meet military standards, featuring a reinforced chassis, all-wheel drive, enhanced suspension, and cab armor for protection in combat zones.

The vehicles can carry up to 27 tons of material, enabling large-scale hauling and construction tasks in rough terrain.

The trucks are part of the army’s ongoing M917A3 Heavy Dump Truck program, which is replacing aging M917 models that have been in service for decades.

Mack Defense said the order will be produced using its US-based manufacturing network supported by an existing supply chain to ensure consistent delivery and maintenance.

Modernizing Military Logistics Through Vehicle Upgrades

The order is part of a broader effort to modernize the army’s tactical vehicle fleet, improve battlefield mobility, reduce maintenance costs, and standardize logistics across the force.

In recent years, the service has invested in updated heavy dump truck variants and expanded its family of medium tactical vehicles program to include trucks with digital controls, improved payloads, and better off-road performance.

Other modernization efforts include the US Marine Corps’ logistics vehicle system replacement and ongoing work on hybrid-electric prototypes under the common tactical truck initiative.
