PGZ, BAE Partner to Build 155mm Artillery Shell Facility in Poland

Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) and BAE Systems have formed a partnership to build a 155mm artillery ammunition production facility in Poland.

Under the initiative, BAE Systems will provide technology and technical expertise to PGZ, enhancing production capacity.

Construction on the new munitions plant in Poland is scheduled to start this year, with completion expected in 2027 or 2028.

The facility will use BAE’s automated production methods, the same approach that, according to the company, has boosted 155mm shell output 16-fold at its UK plants.

The shells will meet NATO requirements and work with standard charges, fuzes, and primers.

With the partnership, Warsaw aims to strengthen its domestic supply chain and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, with the new facility enabling PGZ to produce up to 180,000 155mm shells annually to equip Poland’s K9 and Krab self-propelled howitzers.

The initiative “is not only important for Poland’s own national defense but will also help to enhance its contribution to securing NATO’s eastern flank,” stated Charles Woodburn, BAE Systems Chief Executive.

Boosting Defense

Amid rising security concerns, Warsaw is bolstering its defense posture through increased military spending, procurement, and production of equipment.

Earlier this month, South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace signed agreements with Polish defense partners to advance local ammunition certification and missile production.

One deal involves the state-owned Military Institute of Armament Technology testing 155mm ammunition on Polish Armed Forces platforms, sharing technical expertise, and exploring potential research and development projects.

The move came shortly after Warsaw shot down what it said were Russian drones that entered Polish airspace.

The event occurred as Russia launched a series of strikes across Ukraine, including on the western city of Lviv, roughly 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Poland’s border.
