UK, Ukraine Deepen Industrial Ties With Military Tech-Sharing Accord
The UK and Ukraine have signed a technology-sharing agreement to jointly develop modern military equipment, strengthening security, innovation, and economic growth for both nations.
The agreement builds on the growing industrial partnership between the countries, announced after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s summer meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to London, the cooperation would allow participating contractors “unprecedented access” to share and develop intellectual property, expand tactical equipment production capacity, and attract investment, while supporting Kyiv in its fight to defend against Russia’s invasion.
Project OCTOPUS: Advanced Drone Development
The first initiative under this collaboration, called Project OCTOPUS, will focus on an advanced air defense interceptor drone that will be mass-produced in the UK.
Thousands of unmanned aerial systems are planned for delivery to Kyiv, bolstering defense against attacks similar to Russia’s recent overnight strike on western Ukraine that forced NATO and Warsaw to intercept enemy drones entering Polish airspace.
Interceptor drones cost significantly less than conventional missiles and have shown effectiveness against Moscow’s lethal Shahed loitering munitions, neutralizing them before they can reach their targets.
“As Russia continues its egregious and unrelenting attacks on Ukraine, the UK’s support will not falter, and we alongside our allies will continue to step up,” Starmer said.
“This new partnership is a landmark moment, bringing together British and Ukrainian ingenuity to deliver cutting-edge defence drone technology to fight back against Russian aggression.”
Continuous Military Aid and Industrial Support
In September, UK Defence Secretary John Healey hosted Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal and other European counterparts at the latest Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting, which includes 50 nations supporting sustained military aid for Kyiv.
At the event, Healey confirmed that a UK-led fund for Ukraine has now exceeded 2 billion pounds ($2.7 billion) in commitments.
This would add to the approximately 4.5 billion pounds ($6.1 billion) in defense contributions from the country to Ukraine this year, including training programs through 2026.
A separate 1.6-billion-pound ($2.1 billion) deal is also in the works to supply over 5,000 air defense missiles, creating 200 new job opportunities and supporting 700 further roles in the UK.
The British government also plans a 350-million-pound ($474.5 million) investment to increase drone deliveries to Ukraine from 10,000 in 2024 to 100,000 this year.
