Germany OKs Procurement of New Eurofighter Typhoon Targeting Pods From Rafael
Germany has approved the purchase of 90 Rafael Litening 5 targeting pods for its Eurofighter Typhoon fleet, aiming to boost its armed forces’ precision strike and reconnaissance capabilities.
The Litening 5 is a fifth-generation air-to-ground and air-to-air platform incorporating a mid-wave and short-wave infrared sensor suite, high-resolution color imaging, and dual-wavelength laser designation.
Its features include moving target detection, multi-target tracking, automatic target recognition, long-range target identification, low-radar cross-section threat detection, missile cueing, and unmanned aerial system detection.
The device can be fitted with an optional synthetic aperture radar that provides all-weather, wide-area imaging, enhancing target recognition under complex operations.
Additionally, the solution is compatible with laser, GPS, and image-guided munitions and supports real-time datalink across various frequency ranges.
Litening 5’s flexible design allows it to be fitted on a variety of aircraft and is already in use on more than 26 models, including the F-15, F-16, Gripen, A-10, Mirage 2000, and Embraer jets.
Equipping ‘Proven’ Technology
According to Rafael, the move highlights Berlin’s long-standing defense partnership with the firm and aligns with NATO trends emphasizing multi-wavelength sensors and stand-off targeting in contested airspaces.
“Germany’s move from Litening 3 to Litening 5 reflects both satisfaction with system performance and the Bundeswehr’s emphasis on improved precision, survivability, and future growth potential,” the Haifa-based company said.
“This mirrors a wider European trend of upgrading existing fleets through advanced sensors rather than relying solely on new platforms. Their operational record and modular design make them a reliable solution for militaries seeking interoperability and mission adaptability without major platform changes.”
