US Army Picks Ultra’s Archer Troposcatter System for Secure Comms

The US Army has selected Ultra I&C to supply its Archer beyond-line-of-sight troposcatter system following the Texas-headquartered company’s unveiling of the system last year.

Under the initial award, which has an undisclosed contract value, troops will train and evaluate the Archer’s ability to maintain resilient and secure battlefield communications in contested environments.

“The Army requires resilient communications solutions to meet mission requirements while operating in the most demanding operational environments,” said Jeffrey Wrobel, VP of business development for the company’s Communications division.

“In the landscape of congested modern warfare and the real possibility of a day without satellites, troposcatter is an essential technology.”

With one antenna and leveraging adaptive coding and modulation, the Archer can maintain secure communication links over more than 200 kilometers (124 miles).

It can be deployed in 15 minutes. Using troposcatter technology that bounces radio signals off the atmosphere, the system can transfer data without a direct visual path between the sender and receiver and without needing satellites or ground infrastructure.

Archer is enhanced with advanced encryption and anti-jamming features and meets all required military standards for operations in the most challenging environments.

Furthermore, it is built as a modular, upgradeable platform designed for interoperability with current US Army systems. It is rugged enough for diverse and extreme operational environments, including arid deserts and polar regions.
