BAE, Hanwha Team on Multi-Sensor Satellite Development

BAE Systems has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hanwha Systems to jointly offer advanced satellite systems for global customers.

The partnership encompasses the exploration and development of a next-generation multi-sensor capability, centered on BAE’s advanced ultra-wideband radio frequency technology.

The consortium will leverage Hanwha’s space domain specialty and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) products for a robust intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) application.

“Bringing together our pedigree in space with Hanwha Systems’ expertise in SAR satellites represents an exciting opportunity to progress ISR capabilities from space for international markets,” BAE Systems Digital Intelligence Space Director Rachael Hoyle stated.

Sung-Chan Song, head of the space division at Hanwha Systems, expressed confidence in the teaming agreement, highlighting that “small SAR satellites are increasingly recognized as essential assets for surveillance and reconnaissance operations.”

“Hanwha Systems is honored to partner with BAE Systems as we aim to strengthen our footprint in the international satellite market,” Sung-Chan said.

Satellite Cluster for UK, Allies

BAE Systems noted that the recent partnership aligns with the company’s ongoing project to support real-time ISR information distribution for the British military and allied forces.

Introduced in 2022, the initiative will bring a satellite constellation that will enable space-based relay of visual, radar, and radio frequency data to any part of the world.

The cluster, named Azalea, will incorporate satellites that are fully reconfigurable, sustaining operability for national security and disaster response.

BAE is set to launch the constellation later this year, with the effort expected to “boost domestic and international markets’ ability to understand the threats and hazards in, from and through space.”

“The UK and South Korea are already world leaders in the space industry, and this new partnership is exactly what we both need to create jobs, advance cutting-edge technologies and expand into new international markets,” UK Industry Minister Sarah Jones said.

“Our modern Industrial Strategy will set out how we’ll boost the space sector further to reach new heights and unlock more investment and jobs in the industries of tomorrow, as part of this government’s Plan for Change.”
