Rauma Launches First Finnish Navy Pohjanmaa Warship

Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) has launched the Finnish Navy’s first Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvette in Satakunta.

The event saw the vessel transferred from its assembly center to a dock basin, marking the final phase of outfitting prior to its delivery and commissioning into the force.

Helsinki is scheduled to put the system into service by 2027 and its sister ships by 2029.

The initial corvette’s hull was completed in February 2025, with its first steel for construction cut in November 2023.

“The newly launched vessel is a strong indication of the close and goal-oriented co-operation between the Finnish Government, the Finnish Defence Forces, the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Institute, the Finnish Navy, Rauma Marine Constructions, Saab, and all our industrial partners,” RMC Project Director Timo Ståhlhammar stated.

‘Impressive Vessels’ Soon

Finland’s Pohjanmaa warship program supports the armed forces’ transition from its aging anti-submarine and anti-missile vessels into a modern fleet.

The initiative, unveiled in 2015, aims to adopt surface combatants that can operate all year round.

Resulting systems will cover critical maritime infrastructure security, mine-laying and countermeasures, and undersea intelligence and deterrence.

“These impressive vessels will constitute the core of the Navy’s striking power in both national defence and Allied collective defence tasks for the decades to come,” Finnish Navy Commander Rear Adm. Tuomas Tiilikainen remarked at the recent ceremony.

The Pohjanmaa Corvette

Finland’s Pohjanmaa-class system measures 117 meters (384 feet) long and can accommodate more than 70 sailors as well as a maritime helicopter.

It will be armed with remote weapon systems, torpedoes, electronic warfare solutions, naval guns, and multi-domain missiles.

The platform is equipped with a 38,000 horsepower engine for a range of 6,500 kilometers (4,039 miles), a top speed of 26 knots (48 kilometers/30 miles per hour), and endurance of up to 14 days.
