Hexagon Acquires Inertial Sense to Boost Military Navigation Capabilities

Hexagon has acquired Inertial Sense to strengthen its position in military-grade navigation systems.

The Sweden-based industrial technology firm said the deal adds tactical-grade global navigation satellite and inertial navigation system capabilities to its aerospace and defense portfolio.

Utah-based Inertial Sense develops compact navigation units that combine satellite positioning with onboard inertial sensors, allowing platforms to maintain accuracy when GPS signals are jammed or unavailable.

More than 30,000 of its systems are already deployed across defense and commercial use cases, according to the company.

Stig Pedersen, President of Aerospace & Defence Division at Hexagon, said that Inertial Sense’s “compact, cost-effective solutions meaningfully enhance our ability to serve aerospace and defense applications.”

Defense Merger Gains Pace

The first few months of 2026 saw a wave of consolidation across the defense sector, as companies race to secure critical technologies such as autonomy, sensors, and resilient navigation.

In April, KNDS France completed its acquisition of Texelis Defense, bringing a key vehicle mobility systems supplier fully in-house amid rising demand for land platforms in Europe.

In March, Leonardo acquired Iveco Group’s Iveco Defence Vehicles and ASTRA for $1.8 billion.

The deal supports its strategy to expand as a fully integrated original equipment manufacturer in the land defense sector.

Elbit Systems, in January, purchased UK-based UAV Tactical Systems. This move allows the Israeli firm to leverage its global expertise in unmanned systems while retaining the company’s workforce, as well as strengthen support for European and NATO customers.
