Vuzix Secures Development Contract for Military Waveguide Display System

US tech firm Vuzix has secured a customer-funded development contract from an undisclosed aerospace and defense supplier to advance a waveguide-based display system for military use.

The order supports ongoing work on a head-mounted display intended for operational environments, using technology designed to present digital information directly within the user’s field of view.

The program focuses on engineering and design activities to move the system toward a production-ready configuration.

It builds on a prior agreement with the same customer announced last year and could lead to full-scale manufacturing if development milestones are met.

President and Chief Executive Officer of Vuzix Paul Travers stated that “customer-funded engineering efforts such as this highlight the value of our waveguide, optics, and display expertise, and reinforce our position within next-generation military display systems.”

According to the company, the initiative reflects continued demand for compact displays  designed for integration into military and wearable platforms.

Vuzix supports these programs through its 13,000-square-foot (1,208-square-meter) manufacturing facility in New York State, where it develops and produces specialized optical equipment.

Latest Contracts

The latest contract builds on Vuzix’s ongoing work with US military programs and defense contractors.

In 2023, Vuzix secured contracts with two undisclosed US defense customers to supply augmented reality systems and related engineering support.

One of the agreements involved a contractor focused on situational awareness and personal protection solutions, with work centered on integrating projector and waveguide components into helmet-based heads-up display systems.

Earlier, in 2022, Vuzix entered a collaboration with L3Harris to develop a military-grade optical system.
