Rheinmetall to Supply $1.2B in Infantry Soldier Kits for Germany

Germany has awarded Rheinmetall Electronics a 1.04-billion-euro ($1.2 billion) contract to procure additional Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System (IdZ-ES) kits for its armed forces.

The order stipulates 237 platoon systems on top of modernization for existing IdZ-ES devices.

The package will be distributed to 8,600 troops, increasing the overall platoon system deliveries under the initiative to 353 and individual sets to approximately 12,000.

Shipments for this tranche will be facilitated from 2027 to 2029.

Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System

The IdZ-ES is a networked set of equipment that streamlines directives across mounted and dismounted troops.

Each IdZ-ES “platoon system” consists of 35 “soldier systems,” which incorporate protective gear and small arms attachments, navigation, optics, optronics, and communications to streamline.

Those peripherals are linked to an Interconnected Command Control Communications Computer Unit, handled by team leaders, and are offered in an upgraded architecture that enhances data relay between soldiers, Boxer armored fighting vehicles, Puma infantry fighting vehicles, and, in the future, aerial platforms.

Up to $3.6B in Orders

Berlin’s latest award builds on a framework agreement signed in 2025 with a ceiling of 3.1 billion euros ($3.6 billion) and a completion date by 2030.

To date, 68 IdZ-ES platoon systems are already in use, while 24 are still being acquired.

Rheinmetall noted that the entirety of the effort is supported by over 30 subcontractors.

“Digital soldier-systems play an increasingly important role in future digital battlefield operations,” the company said.

“The commissioned modernised design status eliminates all technically obsolete components and implements communication and data exchange capabilities with different vehicle platforms.”
