Lithuania Receives New Advanced Surface‑to‑Air Missile Systems

Lithuania has begun receiving new National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), marking a fresh step in its effort to tighten protection of key military and civilian assets against aerial threats.

According to the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence, the deliveries are part of efforts to boost the country’s air defense as the systems are “faster, sharper, and more resilient than ever.”

NASAMS has already become a central element of Vilnius’ medium-range air defense posture.

In April 2025, the country allotted 187.7 million euros ($200 million) to purchase the systems, together with 27 Boxer infantry fighting vehicles. This followed previous procurements as far back as 2017.

Lithuania has also contributed NASAMS units to Ukraine, a decision that reinforced operational cooperation with allies while accelerating replacement and modernization cycles at home.

Lithuania Boosts Air Defense Layers

Alongside NASAMS deliveries, Lithuania has expanded its focus toward countering drones and low-flying aerial threats, which have become a growing concern across NATO’s eastern flank.

In January, the Baltic nation ordered additional Bolide missiles from Saab worth $326 million, with deliveries expected from 2028 to 2032.

In December 2025, the country procured its third Mobile Short Range Air Defense system for approximately $148 million.

To reinforce deterrence near its eastern border, Vilnius expanded missile cooperation with Sweden in October 2025, focusing on systems designed to strengthen coverage against potential threats.

By August 2025, it had also integrated Ukrainian acoustic detection technology to improve early warning against drone activity.

In May 2024, Lithuania announced its plan to buy IRIS-T missile systems from Germany.
