Italian Navy Receives ‘Tritone’ Multi-Purpose Support Vessel

The Italian Navy has taken delivery of its upgraded “Tritone” multi-purpose support vessel at Fincantieri’s Palermo shipyard.

The support vessel was built for underwater operations and completed enhancements to boost operational capabilities and link it seamlessly to the navy’s command network.

Featuring a modular architecture, the Tritone can carry, power, and maintain a range of payloads, including uncrewed aerial, surface, and underwater systems. It can also easily adopt tech upgrades without requiring modifications.

Tritone will test ideas and define specifications for the navy’s upcoming Multi-Purpose Underwater Domain Surveillance Vessels (UPSDS) set to enter service around 2031.

As the underwater domain evolves into a complex ecosystem that mixes military, commercial, and dual-use technology, integrating uncrewed systems into traditional platforms helps boost naval power, according to Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri.

“With Nave Tritone, Fincantieri reaffirms its industrial vision and its role as a technological enabler for the national system, recognizing the underwater domain as one of the strategic pillars of the 2026–2030 Business Plan and contributing to the strengthening of a technological sovereignty that is becoming ever more crucial for Italy’s future,” he said.

Italian Navy Modernization

Fincantieri is actively modernizing the Italian Navy through several shipbuilding programs, with Tritone’s handover as one of them.

This year, the company launched the navy’s latest Quirinale hydro-oceanographic vessel for mapping and scientific monitoring, and the lead offshore patrol vessel, Ugolino Vivaldi (P 440).

Beyond providing ships, the Italian firm is also set to strengthen the cyber resilience of naval units.
