US Navy Taps General Dynamics for $55M Submarine Combat System Upgrade

The US Navy has awarded General Dynamics Mission Systems a $55-million contract to upgrade the AN/BYG‑1 submarine combat control system, aiming to enhance tactical capabilities across the fleet.

The contract covers the design, development, integration, testing, and delivery of the tactical control system. Work will take place in Manassas, Virginia, with completion expected by July 2027.

The AN/BYG‑1 system is central to submarine operations, providing a digital architecture that integrates sensors, weapons, and navigation for real-time decision-making in undersea combat.

Upgrades under the contract will improve system reliability, enhance interoperability, and prepare the platform for future technology insertion.

The modernization effort is intended to ensure submarines remain effective in increasingly complex maritime environments.

US Advances Submarine Combat and Undersea Systems

The AN/BYG-1 upgrade is part of broader US Navy efforts to modernize undersea warfare capabilities.

In March, the US Navy awarded a $478-million contract to Lockheed Martin to produce and support submarine imaging systems, improving detection, tracking, and undersea image processing aboard both new and in-service boats.

The service also awarded L3Harris Technologies a contract in the same month to supply a Torpedo Tube Launch and Recovery system, which helps submarines deploy and recover autonomous underwater vehicles without surfacing.

Industry demonstrations further reflect these efforts.

In February, Ultra Maritime showcased next-generation sonar and unmanned undersea sensing systems, including lightweight sonar designed for rapid submarine detection and long-range monitoring.
