Germany Orders 200 Rolls-Royce Propulsion Systems for Puma Fleet

Rolls-Royce Power Systems has received a contract to supply 200 new mtu PowerPacks for the German Armed Forces’ Puma infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).

Each PowerPack features upgraded cooling, new power electronics, and a 10V 890 engine producing more than 1,000 horsepower.

The 10-cylinder propulsion system enables the vehicle to reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour and a range of about 600 kilometers (373 miles).

Berlin is scheduled to begin receiving the capabilities in 2028.

“The Puma’s powerpack is unique in its compactness and power density — effectively the Formula 1 engine of tank propulsion systems,” said Knut Müller, SVP for government business at Rolls-Royce.

“With the new powerpacks, we are making a significant contribution to the Bundeswehr’s operational readiness and modernisation, whilst at the same time strengthening European defence capabilities through scalable, proven technologies.”

Landmark Achievement

Rolls-Royce said the contract is among its largest military orders to date and reflects Germany’s continued reliance on the company to provide defense systems capable of dynamic operations.

“This order sends a strong signal of confidence in our technology and our industrial capabilities,” said Dr. Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

“At the same time, it demonstrates that we are scaling up in a targeted manner within a growing market — by expanding our production capacities, investing in modern manufacturing and continuing to build up our skilled workforce.”

Puma IFVs in Germany

The propulsion deal follows Germany’s investment of more than $4 billion to acquire additional Puma vehicles for its military.

Contracted in a joint venture between Rheinmetall and KNDS, the program will include 200 platforms that are each equipped with Rafael’s proprietary Spike LR anti-tank guided missile.

Currently, Berlin records approximately 350 of the IFVs in its arsenal, most of which have been commissioned since 2013.
