The German Armed Forces has begun receiving GL-40 grenade launchers from Austrian manufacturer Steyr Arms, following a new order that expands a 2024 contract.
Steyr confirmed that initial deliveries have left its Kleinraming facility, with a parallel agreement secured for additional units under an amended framework deal finalized in late February.
The original deal covers 4,776 launchers, part of Berlin’s broader military modernization push, with units expected to have a slightly modified version of the standard GL-40 tailored for the military.
“Big praise to our team for the success in this competition and the rapid implementation of production,” Militär Aktuell quoted Steyr Managing Director Milan Slapak as saying, highlighting the company’s quick turnaround after contract signing.
The GL-40 Technology
GL-40 is a 40-millimeter launcher developed for both standalone use and integration with weapons such as the G95K and Steyr AUG 5.56-millimeter assault rifles, as well as the recently introduced G95A1 systems.
Its modular design allows compatibility with various optics and sighting accessories.
Weighing about 1.7 kilograms (3.75 pounds), the GL-40 features a compact frame, an adjustable stock, and a side-loading barrel.
Its cold-forged structure improves durability and helps maintain accuracy under sustained use.
Steyr said the system is already in international service and emphasized its role in supporting NATO-aligned forces.
“We are proud to continue to play an active role in strengthening European defense capabilities,” Slapak said.
