Calian to Accelerate Development of Canadian C5ISRT Capabilities
Calian Group has announced an initiative to accelerate the development and deployment of sovereign Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Targeting (C5ISRT) capabilities in Canada through its innovation arm, Calian Ventures.
Launched with $100 million in initial funding, the initiative aims to address rising defense requirements, including Arctic sovereignty, national security, and modernization within the Canadian Armed Forces.
The plan includes direct investment from Ventures, co-development of new intellectual property with Canadian small and mid-size enterprises, and contributions from regional investors and federal programs.
The first step will establish a national network of regional development labs to provide facilities for testing, validating, and scaling defense technologies developed through Ventures.
Participation will include the Canadian Armed Forces, NATO partners, federal and regional agencies, academia, and industry.
The labs are intended to accelerate the transition from concept to operational capability.
“Canada is facing a fundamentally different security environment and meeting the moment requires sustained investment, trusted partners and long-term commitment,” said Patrick Houston, Chief Executive Officer of Calian.
“This investment reflects Calian’s confidence in Canada’s defense future and our responsibility as a Canadian company to help strengthen Canadian sovereignty as well as help build the Canadian defense industrial base.”
C5ISRT Architecture
Calian’s C5ISRT technologies enable integrated multi-domain defense operations.
Efforts focus on linking platforms and networks across land, maritime, air, space, and cyber domains.
This system enables sensor and communications data to be integrated into a shared operational picture.
Calian’s systems operate in electromagnetic and cyber-contested environments and leverage human-machine collaboration to accelerate decision-making, while maintaining readiness through networked training ecosystems.
C5ISRT also integrates live, virtual, and constructive training environments with real operational systems.
It allows forces to train as they fight, rehearse complex joint and coalition scenarios, and measure readiness through data-driven analytics rather than relying solely on costly live exercises.
