Rolls-Royce to Supply 350 mtu Series 199 Engines for Boxer Vehicles
Rolls-Royce will provide 350 mtu Series 199 engines for new Boxer armored wheeled vehicles for the German Armed Forces and other international customers.
The orders were placed by Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland.
Each engine is an 8-cylinder unit with a power output of either 530 kilowatts (710 horsepower) or 600 kilowatts (805 horsepower).
Delivery of the first vehicles is scheduled for the first half of 2026.
The Boxer is an eight-wheeled modular vehicle with mission-specific modules mounted on a standard drive platform.
This design has allowed rapid development of multiple variants for European and non-European armies.
All Boxer vehicles, more than 2,000 ordered or delivered, are powered by mtu 8V199 engines.

Expanding Capabilities
According to Rolls-Royce, the mtu Series 199 has become one of the most widely used engine programs for military land vehicles, with more than 4,500 engines delivered to NATO and allied forces.
Building on this, the British firm is now expanding the Series 199 into a broader engine family to address increasing performance requirements and constrained defense budgets.
Upgrades include improved variants of the 8-cylinder engine, and the development of a 10-cylinder version with up to 1,100 kilowatts (1,475 horsepower) and a 12-cylinder version with over 1,300 kilowatts (1,745 horsepower).
The program focuses on enabling components to be shared across different engine variants.
This approach is intended to simplify engine replacement within vehicle fleets, reduce the complexity of spare parts inventory and supply chains, and enable faster, more efficient field maintenance.
By standardizing components, it also reduces logistical burden, lowers operational costs, and improves readiness and sustainment capabilities during military operations.
