France Taps Thales Alenia for Military Space Radar Imaging Program

France has selected Thales Alenia Space to develop the radar payload and user ground segment for the DESIR program, which aims to develop domestic radar imaging for military use.

The capability also supports dual-use missions, including environmental monitoring, crisis response, and maritime surveillance.

The program builds on Thales Alenia Space’s Earth observation and ground segment expertise, with synthetic aperture radar providing all-weather imaging to complement existing optical systems.

Teams specializing in radar altimetry will contribute to the radar development, while the user ground segment will leverage systems previously deployed for export missions.

Expected to enter service in early 2029, the demonstrator will be followed by a two-year operational evaluation by the French government.

Industry Cooperation

The program is managed by an industrial consortium with distinct responsibilities for the space and ground segments, combining the expertise of Thales Alenia Space, Loft Orbital, and Tekeever, supported by French small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Loft Orbital will provide the satellite and ground control segment, Thales Alenia Space will deliver the radar payload and user ground segment, and Tekeever will develop the active antenna.

The teaming model is designed to keep key technologies and associated intellectual property under national control.

Boosting Space Capabilities

DESIR forms part of broader French initiatives to modernize the defense space sector and reduce dependence on foreign technologies.

It also contributes to industrial and economic sovereignty by keeping advanced space know-how in the country.

Last month, Paris launched the SkyFortress Innovation Acceleration Project to strengthen military space operations.

SkyFortress will test a hybrid network of ground stations to provide the French Armed Forces with backup options and ensure satellite links remain reliable during disruptions.

In October 2025, Thales secured a contract with France’s defence procurement agency to develop and deploy AURORE, a radar system for monitoring satellites and debris in low Earth orbit.

AURORE aims to strengthen France’s and Europe’s ability to protect space assets, providing real-time tracking and continuous coverage.
