US Army Picks HERO-90 Loitering Munition to Boost Infantry Anti-Armor Capability

The US Army has selected UVision’s HERO-90 loitering munition for its Low Altitude Stalking and Strike Ordnance (LASSO) program to provide dismounted troops with a man-portable precision-strike capability against armored targets.

While details of the selection have not been disclosed, the army reportedly requested around $68 million in its fiscal 2026 budget to procure 98 fire control units and 294 all-up rounds of loitering munitions under the program.

The request follows the army’s earlier acquisition of the Switchblade 600 loitering munition from Virginia-based AeroVironment under the LASSO program.

The army plans to equip five brigade combat teams with loitering munitions in 2026.

This move is part of a broader modernization effort under the Army Transformation Initiative, which seeks to streamline requirements, prioritize combat formations that directly contribute to lethality, and better align resources with strategic objectives.

“Selection of HERO-90 reflects the Army’s focus on portability, lethality, and MOSA-ready integration. Together with UVision, Mistral will support PdM (Product Manager) Soldier Precision Targeting Devices with a solution that aligns to Common Control and integrates seamlessly across the BCT kill chain,” Senior Vice President at Mistral Inc, Yoav Banai, said.

Designed for anti-armor missions, the loitering munition features multiple warhead configurations, including anti-armor and high-explosive variants.

The 18-kilogram (40-pound) system carries a 3-kilogram (6.6-pound) warhead and offers a range of up to 28 miles (45 kilometers) with an endurance of approximately 40 minutes.

It supports man-in-the-loop operation, mission abort and re-engagement, and integration with common control architectures.

A lightweight, backpack-portable launcher enables rapid deployment by a single operator, while electro-optical/infrared sensors and AI-assisted tracking support precision engagement in complex operational environments.

“The army’s LASSO program is accelerating a transformational anti-armor capability for dismounted units,” Vice President of Business Development, Sales & Marketing at UVision, Jarmin Blanton, said.

“HERO-90 was designed precisely for this mission — fast to deploy, lethal at range, and adaptable through open architectures. We’re proud to collaborate with Mistral to deliver this overmatch to US soldiers.”
