Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has expanded its operations in Birmingham, Alabama, with the addition of a new 40,000-square-foot facility, increasing the company’s total footprint at its Oxmoor Valley campus to about 150,000 square feet.
The new building will include office space and areas dedicated to electro-mechanical systems development and integration.
The expansion is intended to support rising demand across several US defense and national security programs, the company said.
Supporting Defense Manufacturing Growth in Alabama
Headquartered in San Diego, Kratos said the Birmingham site supports work across multiple technology areas, including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems; radar and communications platforms; and materials inspection technologies.
The facility will contribute to programs such as the HORUS high-altitude imaging system, the CRADLE mobile bistatic radar communications platform, and UltraSpec, a non-destructive inspection technology used for advanced composite materials.
The Birmingham operations are part of Kratos’ products and systems engineering activities and reflect broader trends in the US defense industrial base, where companies are increasing domestic manufacturing and integration capacity amid sustained demand for advanced military systems.
Michael Johns, Senior Vice President of Kratos SRE, said the company has significantly increased its workforce in Birmingham since Kratos acquired the business three years ago..
Kratos acquired the Birmingham-based business — formerly Southern Research Engineering — in May 2022.
Since then, the company has consolidated and expanded operations on a 52-acre campus in the Oxmoor Valley area.
The site houses laboratories and development facilities supporting a range of defense-related work, including missile and strategic deterrence systems, space and satellite communications, hypersonic technologies, exotic materials testing, and trusted microelectronics.
The campus also supports research in anti-tamper technologies and other classified and unclassified defense programs.
