Leonardo and KNDS Deutschland will develop a new mobile artillery system for the Italian Army, combining KNDS’s Artillery Gun Module with Leonardo’s wheeled vehicle platform.
The joint system will leverage Leonardo’s advanced electronics, command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C5I), and unmanned aerial vehicle defense technologies alongside KNDS’s artillery expertise to enhance combat power and operational effectiveness.
Both companies aim to strengthen industrial cooperation, improve supply chain resilience, and accelerate time-to-market, offering a fully integrated solution for the Italian Army’s procurement program.
“This Letter of Intent is an important step toward improving the interoperability of European land forces and the cooperation of European industry,” Florian Hohenwarter, incoming CEO of KNDS Deutschland, said.
Leonardo’s Recent Partnerships and Developments
Over the past two years, Leonardo has actively pursued collaborations to advance integrated defense solutions across Europe and beyond.
In 2025, Leonardo and Turkey’s Baykar formalized a joint venture focused on designing, developing, producing, and maintaining unmanned aerial systems, combining Baykar’s drone platforms with Leonardo’s mission systems, payloads, and aerospace certification expertise.
This deal follows an earlier memorandum of understanding between the two companies.
In 2024, Leonardo entered a partnership with MBDA to develop a laser-based counter-drone system for the Italian Navy.
