Fincantieri to Deliver Versatile Supply Vessel for Italian Navy Modernization

Fincantieri will provide the Italian Navy with a supply vessel designed for maximum operational versatility, including underwater operations, marking a step forward in naval modernization.

Through the company’s Underwater Technology Hub, the vessel will undergo refitting at Fincantieri’s Palermo shipyard to become a technologically advanced platform integrated within Italy’s national naval capabilities.

Its modular configuration allows rapid adaptation to different missions. These include logistical support and specialized tasks, among others.

According to CEO Pierroberto Folgiero, the project highlights Fincantieri’s role as a technological enabler, combining operational speed, innovation, and industrial vision while supporting Italy’s strategic maritime presence.

Italian Navy Modernization Efforts

This project is part of a broader modernization push within the Italian Navy over the past year.

In 2024, Rome commissioned the amphibious transport dock Trieste, enhancing its capacity for rapid troop deployment and humanitarian missions.

The navy also advanced its submarine fleet with the continued introduction of the Sauro-class upgrades and preparations for the new Todaro‑class (Type 212A) enhanced capabilities, including improved sonar systems and underwater endurance.

Additionally, Fincantieri has been involved in modernizing frigates and corvettes, such as the FREMM multipurpose frigates, incorporating new radar, missile, and electronic warfare systems to maintain interoperability with NATO allies.
