French Navy’s Mistral Helicopter Carriers Undergo Navigation System Upgrade

CNN MCO, Thales, and CS GROUP have partnered to modernize the navigation systems on France’s three Mistral-class amphibious helicopter carriers.

The agreement covers the vessels Mistral, Tonnerre, and Dixmude, as well as support for the replenishment and reconnaissance ship Somme.

Installations on the Dixmude and Tonnerre, along with additional system upgrades, will proceed according to the fleet’s maintenance schedule, with full rollout expected by 2027.

The project aims to ensure the French Navy’s amphibious ships maintain full operational capability, even in electronic warfare conditions that can compromise GPS-based navigation.

“We’re proud to play a part in providing resilient navigation solutions for France’s naval vessels as a prerequisite for ensuring freedom of action by armed forces at sea,” stated Florent Chauvancy, VP of Flight Avionics at Thales.

The Partnership

Under the partnership, Thales will provide its TopAxyz inertial navigation system that determines a ship’s position, speed, and heading entirely from onboard measurements.

It uses internal sensors, including gyroscopes and accelerometers, to continuously track the vessel’s motion, operating independently of external signals such as GPS.

CS GROUP will integrate TopAxyz units into each ship’s overall navigation system, managing sensors, data distribution, embedded systems, and cybersecurity protections.

CNN MCO will be responsible for installing the systems onboard, conducting testing, performing maintenance, and providing support throughout the ships’ operational life.

Mistral-Class

A Mistral-class amphibious helicopter carrier measures 199 meters (653 feet) in length with a 32-meter (105-foot) beam, displaces 21,500 tons, and can reach speeds of 19 knots (35 kilometers/22 miles per hour).

The ship carries a crew of 177 sailors and up to 900 embarked troops, accommodates 16 helicopters, 60 armored vehicles or 13 tanks, and includes a 69‑bed hospital.
