The Turkish Army has inducted its first indigenously developed self-propelled howitzer, marking a significant milestone in the country’s pursuit of artillery self-reliance.
The T-155 TTA integrates MKE’s 155mm Panter howitzer on a BMC 8×8 chassis featuring Aselsan’s fire control suite, with system integration carried out by the 2nd Main Maintenance Factory Directorate of the Turkish Ministry of National Defense.
This project was awarded by the General Directorate of Military Factories in 2020 to Turkish defense firm ASFAT, with the first firing test conducted in December 2022.
Induction followed a three-year qualification program, during which the prototype covered over 20,000 kilometers (12,427 miles) across diverse terrains and fired approximately 350 rounds in a range of live-fire scenarios.
T-155 TTA Features
The wheeled howitzer reportedly offers a road range of approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles) and can reach a top speed of 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour.
It carries 24 rounds of ammunition and can achieve a firing rate of up to six rounds per minute, with the first round fired within 30 seconds of deployment.
Depending on the projectile and propellant charge, the system’s range is reported at around 18 kilometers (11 miles) with M107 HE, 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) with M549A1 HE, and up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) when firing MOD 274 extended-range rounds.
The platform features a computerized control and monitoring suite, a C4I-compatible ballistic computer, and inertial navigation for both land navigation and gun laying.
Additional equipment includes a muzzle-velocity radar and thermal camera for precise indirect and direct fire in both day and night operations.
Protection is provided by a STANAG 4569-compliant armored cab, with optional ballistic and mine protection for the superstructure.
Compliance with NATO’s Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding 155mm standards further enhances ammunition interoperability and streamlines coalition logistics.
Turkish Artillery
Apart from being the first home-grown self-propelled howitzer, the T-155 TTA is also Turkey’s first wheeled artillery system, offering improved road mobility and reduced maintenance costs compared to tracked platforms.
The Turkish Army currently operates more than 280 T-155 Fırtına tracked howitzers, domestically produced through technology transfer from South Korea, along with upgraded M52, and legacy US-origin M44 and M110 systems.
