Egypt, NVL Begin Building New Coastal Protection Fleet
Egypt has started building a new fleet of coastal protection vessels in partnership with the German shipbuilder NVL, marking a major step in strengthening its naval capabilities and local shipbuilding industry.
Production of the PV43-M class began in September at Alexandria Shipyard under the supervision of NVL Egypt, a subsidiary of NVL Group.
The program involves ten 43-meter (141-feet) vessels equipped with advanced European weapon systems designed for surveillance, reconnaissance, and protection of maritime infrastructure along Egypt’s coastlines.
Awarded to NVL Egypt in 2023, the project is the first of its kind to be built entirely in Egypt with technical support from NVL’s headquarters in Germany.
The collaboration aims not only to expand the Egyptian Navy’s operational capabilities but also to boost the domestic maritime sector through technology transfer and workforce development.
NVL Egypt managing director Maged Marie described the program as a foundation for advancing Cairo’s shipbuilding capacity and enabling future defense projects.
Meanwhile, NVL Group CEO Tim Wagner said the partnership will extend beyond construction to include maintenance, training, and long-term technical support to sustain the navy’s readiness.
New Naval Projects Reflect Egypt’s Maritime Ambitions
The PV43-M program joins a series of major naval developments undertaken by Egypt in recent years.
In 2020, the Egyptian Navy commissioned the ENS Al-Galala and ENS Bernice, two FREMM frigates acquired from Italy’s Fincantieri.
Around the same time, Egypt completed the delivery of four Gowind 2500 corvettes built by France’s Naval Group, three of which were constructed locally at the Alexandria Shipyard under a technology transfer arrangement.
Egypt has also expanded its submarine fleet with German-built Type 209/1400 models from thyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the most recent of which was delivered in 2021.
In addition, the navy operates Mistral-class helicopter carriers acquired from France, which serve as the flagship vessels for its growing fleet.
