Germany has contracted local shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) to supply HMS-12M minehunting sonars for the German Navy’s MJ332 minehunting vessels.
The new systems will significantly enhance the vessels’ ability to detect and classify mines, even in complex environmental and seabed conditions.
Integration of the sonars will be carried out during the boats’ scheduled maintenance periods, ensuring minimal disruption to fleet operations and sustained operational readiness.
“Our largest HMS-12M order to date represents an important contract for TKMS and the ATLAS ELEKTRONIK segment,” Executive Vice President of the ATLAS ELEKTRONIK segment at TKMS, Michael Ozegowski, was quoted as saying.
“The modern sensor will significantly increase the Navy’s detection and classification probability. We are pleased that our customers trust in our technology and our support until the end of its service life.”
HMS-12M Sonar
The hull-mounted tri-frequency sonar delivers superior resolution and extended detection ranges, enabling more effective mine countermeasure operations such as minehunting, mine and obstacle avoidance, and route surveying.
By utilizing multiple frequencies for precise detection and classification, the system is highly effective at identifying bottom, moored, and partially buried mines.
Its stabilized antenna supports continuous tracking of detected objects, maintaining reliable performance even in challenging conditions with waves up to 2.5 to 4 meters (8 to 13 feet) high, corresponding to sea state 5.
