General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has been contracted to supply next-generation reconnaissance vehicles for the German Army’s Reconnaissance Corps.
A total of 274 Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicles will reportedly be delivered under the 3-billion-euro ($3.48-billion) contract, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2032.
The contract also includes training equipment, simulators, comprehensive logistical support services, and an option for the procurement of 82 additional vehicles.
“It is both an honor and an obligation for us to have been selected as the prime contractor for the development and delivery of the new reconnaissance vehicle for the Bundeswehr’s Army Reconnaissance Force,” GDELS Chief Sales Officer and Managing Director of GDELS Deutschland Thomas Kauffmann said.
“We are proud to have prevailed in a competitive acquisition of this highly technologically demanding key project.
Now, our primary objective is to deliver the new reconnaissance vehicle, in collaboration with our partners, to the troops in accordance with the contract on cost and schedule.”
Next-Gen Reconnaissance Vehicles
Based on the latest Piranha 6×6 wheeled platform, the new Luchs 2 will replace the Fennek light 4×4 reconnaissance vehicle.
The amphibious vehicle features advanced networked reconnaissance sensors and superior mobility, coupled with reduced acoustic and thermal signatures.
A separate agreement for the procurement of up to 310 25mm KBA automatic cannons for the vehicles is expected to be finalized with Rheinmetall.
Optimized for medium-range fire support, the weapon has an effective range of up to 2,700 meters (8,858 feet) and a rate of fire of up to 600 rounds per minute.
Hensoldt Optronics will reportedly supply the sensor suite, e.sigma will provide the training simulators, and Saab Bofors Dynamics Switzerland will supply the camouflage equipment.
The vehicle’s gross weight is expected to be 25 tons, with a 7.5-ton payload.
