Raytheon Expands LTAMDS Radar Production Facility in Massachusetts

Raytheon has begun a $53 million expansion of its Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) Production Facility in Andover, Massachusetts, adding 23,000 square feet (2,137 square meters) to the site.

The LTAMDS radar is designed to counter advanced threats, including hypersonic weapons, and the expansion will increase production capacity to speed delivery of next-generation capabilities.

Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, said the investment will enhance the company’s ability to meet growing global demand and ensure US and international customers receive the latest defense technology.

The Andover facility serves as the final integration point for the LTAMDS radar and also manages Patriot system testing.

Construction on the expansion is expected to finish by late 2026.

LTAMDS Radar

The LTAMDS radar provides 360-degree air and missile defense using three antenna arrays, with a main array at the front and two secondary arrays at the rear.

Arrays operate together to detect and engage multiple threats simultaneously from any direction.

The primary array is comparable in size to the Patriot system’s radar but delivers more than double the power.

LTAMDS is built for integration into the US Army’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense system while maintaining compatibility with existing Patriot system investments.

Last month, the US Army awarded Raytheon a $1.7-billion contract to supply the LTAMDS radar to the US and Poland.

The deal covers nine radars, along with engineering services, spare parts, and testing for both countries.

Poland becomes the first international customer to integrate LTAMDS into its air and missile defense system.
