US Army Invests $14M More in Barrett MK22 Rifles

The US Army has added $14.2 million to its contract with Barrett Firearms to acquire more MK22 barrel kits, raising the deal’s total value to over $64 million.

The MK22, also known as the Barrett Multi-Role Adaptive Design rifle, is the army’s newest precision sniper system.

Unlike earlier models, it can be quickly reconfigured to fire different calibers by swapping barrels and bolts. The modular design gives soldiers greater flexibility to adapt to different missions and ranges without requiring multiple rifles.

The contract expansion focuses specifically on 7.62mm and .338-caliber barrel kits. This modification will allow Barrett to supply additional kits that enable units to adjust their MK22 rifles depending on mission requirements, terrain, or rules of engagement.

The $14.2 million contract modification was awarded through the Army Contracting Command in New Jersey, with work and funding determined on a per-order basis.

Deliveries are expected to continue through March 2026.

A Broader Push to Modernize

The US Army first awarded Barrett the MK22 contract in 2021 as part of a plan to replace aging sniper platforms such as the M2010 and M107 rifles, some of which had been in service for decades.

The move also reflects a broader push to modernize small arms, especially for long-range precision engagements. Snipers play a critical role in both counterinsurgency and near-peer conflict scenarios.

Barrett, headquartered in Tennessee, is best known for its iconic .50-caliber M82 rifle, which has become synonymous with American sniper capability over the past three decades.

The company was recently selected by the US Army to produce a next-generation precision grenade launcher, alongside MARS Inc.
