Northrop Partners With Taiwanese Firms to Provide Advanced Radar Systems
Northrop Grumman has partnered with Taiwanese firms Ramatek, Champion Auto, and Vivian & Vincent International Trading to provide the AN/TPS-78 Advanced Capabilities (ADCAP) radar to Taiwan.
The radar operates in the S-band to limit interference and maintain performance in dense signal environments.
Its stacked beam design enables the detection of both high- and low-altitude targets in all weather conditions.
The system’s compact design facilitates transportation and simplifies logistics.
“The AN/TPS-78 ADCAP radar is a proven, long-range and highly mobile system that will significantly enhance Taiwan’s air surveillance capabilities,” said Greg Teitelbaum, vice president, land and maritime sensors, Northrop Grumman.
“We are dedicated to partnering with Taiwanese industry to strengthen Taiwan’s self-defense capacity.”
Last year, the US approved a foreign military sale to Taiwan, including NASAMS air defense systems and AN/TPS-78 and AN/TPS-77 radars, valued at $1.94 billion.
AN/TPS-78
Used by the US Air Force and international partners, the AN/TPS-78 provides long-range air surveillance across various locations.
With a range of up to 240 nautical miles (444 kilometers/275 miles), it provides scan rates of 5 or 10 seconds, supporting both rapid-update missions, such as ground-controlled intercepts, and tactical ballistic missile tracking.
The AN/TPS-78 ADCAP features a subsystem for detecting and tracking small drones and maritime targets, equipped with automated tracking and algorithms designed to maintain continuous monitoring while minimizing false detections.
The radar can be transported via C-130 cargo plane, helicopter, truck, or train.
According to the company, the system can be deployed by a team of four in under 30 minutes.
