Saab Lands First Giraffe 4A Ground-Based Radar Deal in Latin America

Saab has signed a contract to provide its Giraffe 4A radar system and related services for a Latin American country.

The contract, valued at approximately 550 million Swedish kronor ($58.5 million), represents the Swedish company’s first sale of the land-based Giraffe 4A configuration to the region.

The Giraffe 4A is a mobile platform designed for air defense, monitoring, and military air traffic control, with the ability to track multiple targets at once.

“This milestone marks a significant step in expanding our presence in the region with advanced medium range radar,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, head at Saab’s Surveillance division.

“This capability will provide our customer with state-of-the-art air surveillance capability.”

The deal follows earlier orders for the system, including a $148.9-million deal with the Swedish Armed Forces and a $48-million agreement with the US Air Force in Europe.

Giraffe 4A Capabilities

Launched in 2014, the Giraffe 4A can identify aircraft, unmanned aerial systems, missiles, and artillery fire, with a detection range of up to 400 kilometers (249 miles).

The equipment provides 360-degree coverage and can update threat positions every second, according to the company.

When directed toward a known threat axis, it can refresh data up to eight times per second, maintaining awareness for warfighters and infrastructure.

Giraffe 4A can be deployed by two personnel in under 10 minutes, and is compatible with military airlifters, including the C-130 Hercules, A400M Atlas, and C-17 Globemaster III.
