Saab has received an order from Sweden to deliver Giraffe 4A radar systems and related services to the Swedish Armed Forces.
The contract is valued at 1.4 billion Swedish kronor ($144 million), with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2027.
The Giraffe 4A is a multi-function radar capable of tracking numerous targets simultaneously.
It is used for air and maritime surveillance as well as military air traffic control.
“Giraffe 4A will further strengthen Sweden’s ground-based air surveillance and offers a mobile modern sensor, enabling software-based updates,” the company stated.
Multi-Mission Surveillance
The Giraffe 4A can detect and track a wide range of airborne threats, including low and slow targets such as drones, fast jets, and supersonic missiles.
It also identifies rockets, artillery, mortars, and electronic jamming signals.
The system provides 360-degree coverage and updates the position of targets every second.
If the direction of a potential threat is already known, it can focus on that specific area and update the data up to eight times per second.
The radar can detect targets as far as 400 kilometers (248 miles) away.
Giraffe 4A can also support ground-based air defense operations by providing high-precision, fast-updating target data suitable for very short- to medium-range air defense systems.
The mobile version is self-contained and can be set up by two personnel in under 10 minutes, with dismantling taking less than 5 minutes.
It is compatible with standard military transport aircraft such as the C-130, A400M, and C-17 and can be loaded and unloaded using conventional container handling systems.
