Ukraine is set to receive upgraded Hensoldt TRML-4D radars capable of detecting artillery and mortar positions, in addition to their traditional role of tracking and classifying aerial targets, Hensoldt CEO Oliver Dörre reportedly said.
The Hensoldt active electronically scanned array radar can track and classify targets such as low-flying and/or maneuvering cruise missiles and aircraft, as well as hovering helicopters.
A core component of the IRIS-T SLM surface-to-air missile system, the sensor has been delivered to Ukraine in multiple batches since the start of the war.
It is not clear when and in what quantity the upgraded radar will be delivered.
It has also not been disclosed whether all the delivered radars will be equipped with the new capability.
Radars to Be Retrofitted With New Capability
Announcing the development at a recent conference, Dörre noted that Hensoldt’s “software-driven products can deliver new functionality rapidly,” suggesting that the delivered sensors could be retrofitted with the new capability.
Germany has delivered 16 standalone TRML-4Ds to Ukraine in addition to those delivered for the IRIS-T SLMs, according to German Aid To Ukraine.
The upgraded radars could be employed to locate enemy artillery and mortar positions and complement dedicated counter-battery radars such as the COBRA, which was also supplied by Germany.
