Italian Army Takes Delivery of First Upgraded Ariete C2 Tank

The consortium Iveco-Oto Melara (CIO) has delivered the first upgraded Ariete C2 main battle tank to the Italian Army at the Cecchignola military complex near Rome.

This marks the first unit of a planned upgrade for 90 vehicles, designed to enhance the fleet’s operational capabilities.

Upgrades to the Ariete focus on mobility, firepower, and its operations management system.

The program also includes a 10-year logistics support package and is part of the Italian Army’s broader effort to modernize its heavy armored platforms.

CIO President Claudio Catalano stated that the Ariete upgrade project has led to the enhancement of industrial expertise in the tracked vehicle sector in Italy.

He also added that ongoing investments are increasing production capacity and extending the platform’s operational lifespan.

The Ariete C2 is an upgraded version of the Ariete C1 main battle tank, featuring a 1,500-horsepower IVECO V-12 turbo diesel engine with a 20 percent increase in power.

The tank integrates seven road wheels and four return rollers on each side, supported by a suspension system comprising torsion bars and hydraulic bumpers.

The Ariete C2 tank’s interoperability is supported by Leonardo’s C2D/N EVO Command and Control system, combined with a four-channel software-defined radio and satellite communications linked to modern digital intercom systems.

It includes both day and night sights for the commander and gunner, featuring thermal imaging and laser rangefinders.

A new ballistic computer enables accurate firing while in motion.

It is equipped with a 120mm smoothbore gun capable of firing all standard NATO rounds.

Secondary armament includes a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a 12.7mm machine gun mounted on the turret for close engagements and air defense.
